An Indian expat who remained in a hospital morgue for two years after dying in a car crash has only just been identified.

Saif Ahmed, 32, from Uttar Pradesh in India, was returning from Makkah to Riyadh after performing Umrah when his car overturned in a village in the central region on April 12, 2012.

Ahmed was severely injured and transferred to Afif General Hospital and then to Dawadmi General Hospital, where he remained in a coma for over three months until he died on July 17, 2012.

Ahmed’s identity, however, remained unknown due to the lack of an iqama and the fact that no one visited him at the hospital when he was in a coma.

The victim’s body was consequently kept at a morgue indefinitely. Hospital staff and the traffic police informed higher authorities, who were unable to do much without any information, said sources.

Nigar Fatima, Ahmed’s wife, meanwhile, had pleaded with authorities to find her husband, sending a formal request to the Indian Embassy in Riyadh, while his sponsor had registered Ahmed as an absconder.
