The Upper Primary Boys Section of International Indian School-Dammam (IISD) recently celebrated the National Education Day to commemorate the birthday of legendary Indian scholar and freedom hero Maulana Abul Kalam Azad.

Azad was India’s first education minister. Interestingly, the United Nations has declared it as Global Day of Action for promoting girls’ education worldwide. And so the day was dedicated to acknowledge the bravery demonstrated by the 15-year-old Pakistani girl, Malala, who had to suffer for promoting the cause of education for girls.

A skit on adult education and a PowerPoint presentation on the importance of schooling for girls was highly appreciated by the assembled guests. The program the importance of focusing on these issues for the development of a nation.

IISD Principal E.K. Mohammed Shaffe highlighted Azad’s multifaceted personality. He recalled Azad’s unparalleled contributions such the translation of the Holy Qur’an into English and his colossal work, “India Wins Freedom”. Shaffe paid rich tributes to the stellar role that Azad played in country’s freedom struggle and highlighted his efforts in maintaining and promoting peace and harmony during a difficult period in the nation’s checkered history.

As a popular headmaster of Upper Primary Boys Section, Mohammed Ismail drew applause for the program’s idea. “We need to remember our heroes and we need to remind our children of the sacrifices that our forefathers made in the building of our great nation,” said Ismail. He appealed to one and all to let the lamp of education spread light in each and everyone’s life.

In attendance at the program were attended by Vice Principal (Boys Section) Alamgir Islam and chief librarian Nazeer Maniyamkulam.
