RIYADH/JEDDAH: Indian expatriates living in the Kingdom donned patriotic colors on Saturday by gathering in huge numbers to celebrate their 69th Independence Day with great vigor and traditional fervor.

The day started with flag-hoisting ceremonies held simultaneously at the Indian Embassy in Riyadh and the Indian Consulate in Jeddah.

Charge d’Affaires Hemant Kotalwar hoisted the tri-color in Riyadh while Consul General B.S. Mubarak did the honors in Jeddah.

The flag-hoisting was followed by rendition of national anthem and patriotic songs by the students of the international Indian schools in Riyadh and Jeddah.

Kotalwar and Mubarak read out President Pranab Mukherjee’s address to the nation, which primarily focused on strengthening Indian economy and defending the country’s democratic-secular fabric with vigor for a vibrant nation free from divisiveness of all kind.

According to the Indian diplomats, Indians form the largest expatriate population in Saudi Arabia and through hard work, dedication, discipline and law abiding nature, have earned the good will of the host country.

“I take this opportunity to acknowledge the contribution of the Indian expatriate community in building a positive image of India in Saudi Arabia and in promoting India-Saudi relations,” said Mubarak.

“On this day, we remember the sacrifices made by our freedom fighters and national leaders to liberate India from the clutches of colonial rule,” said Mubarak.

“India today is the largest democracy in the world and occupies a distinct place in the comity of nations,” he said. “Independent India epitomizes pluralism and peaceful coexistence. Today India is among the top emerging economies in the world. India’s economic growth, achievements in the field of science and technology and inclusive growth programs have received wide appreciation from around the world.”

The ceremonies were attended by a cross-section of the local Indian community, including Indian students.
