JEDDAH: The Criminal Court in Jeddah has sentenced a Saudi man to two years of imprisonment and 200 lashes for attempting to kidnap a woman and seriously injuring a security personnel who came to her rescue.
According to the charges, the 37-year-old man blocked the way of the woman and her children near a park and forced her at gunpoint to get into his car. The woman raised an alarm and sought the help of a Border Guard personnel who was passing by.
When the security man, Abdullah Al-Thubaiti, intervened, the criminal fired seven rounds from his gun, injuring him and escaping from the scene in his car, local media reported on Monday. The suspect was, however, arrested soon after.
A passerby quickly came to the rescue of the injured security man and took him to the King Fahd Hospital in Jeddah.
Records show that the criminal had been convicted thrice for different crimes.
The Ministry of Interior honored Al-Thubaiti with SR20,000 and medals for his heroic act and high sense of security. The ministry ordered that Al-Thubaiti be treated in the specialist hospitals of the Kingdom and outside if he required such treatment.
