Officials in Jeddah have decided to rename major city streets and squares after people who laid down their lives in the service of the country.

“We have decided to rename 10 streets and squares after military officers who were martyred,” said Hani Aburas, mayor of Jeddah and also chairman of the street naming committee, in a statement. He said that names of seven martyrs will be chosen for renaming streets in Jeddah, while two will be chosen for streets in Qunfuda and one for Leith.

The mayor explained that among the 10 military officers there will be lieutenants, sergeants, deputy sergeants and a corporal.

The Jeddah municipality has formed a committee on directives from the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs to review street names and replace those that do not suit the local culture and traditions, after receiving some complaints from citizens.

These complaints led the ministry to launch the renaming process, and it called on residents to continue sending in their feedback as part of its policy of social partnership with citizens.

While naming streets, the ministry assigns priority to companions of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) but, recently, a royal decree was issued to include the names of military martyrs in the list for use in street names.
