Saudi journalist Mohammad Al-Thubaiti died on Tuesday at King Fahd Specialist Hospital in Dammam, as investigations were completed into an alleged medical error committed by a health worker at the facility.

The medical committee investigating the matter has reportedly completed its investigation and handed the case over to the prosecuting authority for further action. The doctor that had overseen the case had been banned from traveling by the Eastern Province health department.

Al-Thubaiti was initially admitted to the hospital for a minor procedure to remove an abscess from his thigh, which took place under anesthesia. However, a member of the medical team apparently made a mistake by not positioning an oxygen device on him for nearly 10 minutes after the operation.

During this time his heart stopped beating. Although attempts were made to reattach the oxygen tube to remedy the situation, Al-Thubaiti had already lost consciousness and lapsed into a coma, which lasted for more than two weeks until his death.

Khalid bin Mohammed Al-Shaibani, director general of the Eastern Province health department, confirmed that a travel ban was in place for the supervisory doctor. In addition, the health committee had completed its investigation and handed the case to the prosecuting authority, according to media reports on Tuesday.

Eastern Province Gov. Prince Saud bin Naif had ordered the investigation and had been following up on the case. Salman, Mohammad’s brother, had initially laid a complaint against the hospital.

Journalists across the country had earlier posted messages on social networking sites demanding that the Health Ministry and Eastern Province governor open an investigation into the incident.
