CAIRO: US Secretary of State John Kerry is to visit Egypt on Tuesday as pressure piles on Israel and Hamas to end a week-long conflict in Gaza, Egyptian state media reported.

The US top diplomat telephoned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday to renew an offer to help broker a halt to fighting that has killed 175 Palestinians in the past seven days.

Both Israel and Hamas have signalled they were not yet ready to discuss cease-fire terms, as Israel bombards the Gaza Strip and Hamas militants fire rockets into the Jewish state.

“Kerry will visit Egypt tomorrow, Tuesday, to conduct talks with senior officials,” the official MENA news agency reported.

It said Kerry had spoken with his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukri by phone on Sunday about the raging conflict in Gaza.
