RIYADH: The King Faisal Foundation has been honored with the Sultan bin Al-Owais Cultural Award for its social and scientific efforts across the world.
Prince Bandar bin Saud bin Khalid, the organization’s secretary-general, received the award in Sharjah this week. It recognizes the pioneering role played by the charity in aiding needy communities worldwide.
During the selection process, the board screened some 226 applications received for the award. Anwar bin Mohammed Gargash, minister of state for foreign affairs of the UAE and chairman of the Sultan bin Ali Al-Owais Cultural Foundation, presented the award to the winner.
The ceremony was attended by Abdul Rahman bin Mohammed Al-Owais, minister of health and prevention in the UAE, Humaid bin Nasser Al-Owais, Saeed Al-Naboodah, executive director of the Dubai Culture and Arts Association and a number of cultural and literary personalities.
The winner receives the Sultan Al-Owais Award Certificate of Appreciation, a gold medal, trophy, and a cash of $120,000. The winner was chosen based on the scientific and cultural footprint left by the organization in society. It was founded by Sultan Al-Owais in 1987, a poet.
In his speech, Prince Bandar described the award as another feather in its cap.
“It’s an appreciation of the cultural and scientific services rendered by the King Faisal Foundation in accordance with the vision of the late King Faisal, who founded the institution,” he said.
He praised the Sultan bin Ali Al-Owais Cultural Foundation for boosting science among the people in the region and highlighted the efforts made by the UAE and the Kingdom to promote peace and security in the region.
Founded in 1976, the King Faisal Foundation sponsors King Faisal International Prize, given to prominent scholars for outstanding achievements in their fields.
Each of the five prize categories consists of a certificate hand-written in Arabic calligraphy summarizing the laureate’s work, a commemorative 24-carat, 200-gram gold medal, uniquely cast for each prize, and a cash award of SR750,000. The co-winners in each category share the cash grant.
King Faisal International Prize laureates have earned numerous prestigious national and international prizes for their efforts. In some cases, it has preceded other international awards, including the Nobel Prize, thus validating the rigorous and unbiased selection process.
