JEDDAH: The crown prince’s visit to Turkey will enhance political cooperation between the two countries in facing security challenges in the region.
Issues of terrorism and the situation in Syria were discussed between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Naif, deputy premier and interior minister.
During the meeting they discussed ways to enhance efforts to fight Daesh. The two countries have suffered from several terrorist attacks, and Turkish and Saudi experts have said that Saudi Arabia and Turkey are the countries most targeted by terrorist organizations.
Sukru Kirboga, head of Turkish Arab Cultural Association, said that terrorists would like to destabilize the region through attacks in politically stable countries. He said Saudi Arabia and Turkey play a vital role in enhancing security in the Middle East.
Speaking to Arab News, Kirboga said the Kingdom and Turkey succeeded in foiling terrorist plots in their countries and they are the most stable countries in the region. This security and political power can give them more influence to resolve the crisis in the region, especially in Syria. The US and Russian leaders know there cannot be any solution in Syria without the participation of the Kingdom and Turkey in peace talks.
The Kingdom and Turkey formed a high-profile Strategic Cooperation Council to strengthen military and economic cooperation between the two countries when Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman visited Turkey in April 2016.
Sardar Milla Darwish, a political journalist in Turkey, said Saudi Arabia and Turkey have a clear vision to resolve the Syrian crisis. There were reports that claimed that Turkey would change its political stance toward Syria. But subsequent Turkish action proved that Ankara did not change its political stance and it still shares the same political view with Saudi Arabia on Syria.
“Despite increasing US and Russian interference in Syria, Saudi Arabia and Turkey insist they have an essential role in resolving the crisis in Syria. For instance, Turkey plans to create a buffer zone in Syria. Saudi Arabia still has the power to end the crisis in the country which has been destroyed by war. However, the ongoing cooperation between the Kingdom and Turkey is necessary to prove their political presence in the region, he told Arab News.
The crown prince’s visit to Turkey will help open the door of investments to Turkish companies. This will help Turkey become more economically stable. As part of its major role in the region, the Kingdom provides economic support to its allies.
Fahd bin Juma’a, vice president of the Energy and Economic Committee at the Shoura Council, said the Kingdom’s strategy is known in opening the door of investments to all friendly countries. Saudi Arabia is interested in gaining from the Turkish experience in several fields, including food, oil and gas, construction and others field. At the same time, the Kingdom has a new economic vision and the National Transformation Program, and needs to benefit from various experiments of others countries in domestic development.
“Aside from security cooperation, economic issues will be discussed between the two sides. Turkey is an Islamic country and has a long history of friendship and cooperation with the Kingdom. Therefore, cooperation with Turkey includes all aspects,” he told Arab News.
