Video footage allegedly showing a member of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group shooting and wounding a Danish national in Riyadh last month was posted on social networking sites on Tuesday, causing concern among expatriates.

The video of the shooting went viral on social media networks. “This is scary and could have a negative impact on the Saudi economy,” a Western expatriate told Arab News on condition of anonymity.

“This will scare investors,” the Western national said.

He expressed confidence in the ability of the Saudi security forces to counter terrorist activity in the country, but said security measures should be stepped up to prevent further attacks on expatriates.

The video clip of the incident allegedly shows members of IS chasing the victim’s car, with one assailant opening fire on the vehicle.

The Danish man was wounded in the shoulder.

The incident happened while he was leaving his office on Al-Kharj Road, south of the city.

There have been several attacks on expatriates over the past two months. Last week a Canadian national was stabbed in a shopping mall in the Eastern Province.

He is reportedly in a stable condition, and a local man has been arrested, according to the region’s police.

In October this year, a US national was killed and his colleague wounded after being shot by a Saudi national, who had reportedly been fired from his job at a US defense company where he had worked with his victims.

Abdurahman Al-Nami, a media consultant and general supervisor of the media department at Imam Mohammad bin Saud Islamic University, condemned the attacks and said they were isolated incidents.

“While we fully understand the concerns of our guest workers, we must not overstate such incidents.

“Saudi Arabia is a peaceful and stable country and has a duty to protect its citizens and guests. Under the leadership of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah, the country has a high level of security and safety.”

He said Saudi Arabia is able to ward off such attempts to destabilize the country.
