On the 69th National Day of Sri Lanka, I send greetings to the Sri Lankan community in the Western Province and in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Today, the 69th National Day is a unique occasion which coincides with the 150 years of Ceylon tea.
The tea industry supports 20 percent of country’s population through indirect and direct employment and continues to contribute significantly to sustain the economy of Sri Lanka earning over $1,500 million in foreign exchange to the country.
Saudi Arabia and Sri Lanka’s relationship is very significant and goes back centuries, and it is very much vital and important to Sri Lanka’s Muslim population, which accounts for 10 percent of the country’s population of 21 million.
Since the establishment of diplomatic relations with the Kingdom in 1974, the two countries have been maintaining excellent relations in social, cultural, political and economic fields.
In 2016, Sri Lanka exports to Saudi Arabia amounted to approximately $82 million and imports from Saudi Arabia amounted to $122 million.
With Ambassador Azmi Thassim, we pledge our support for the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 and convey our greetings and best wishes to the people of the Saudi Arabia.
