RIYADH: The customs department has thwarted attempts to smuggle into the Kingdom 20,910 spy cameras.

They were hidden in items such as pens, glasses, electrical goods, dresses, medals and cigarette lighters. A total of 1,966 cases were registered.

Issa Al-Issa, spokesman of Saudi Customs, revealed the figures, according to an online newspaper.

Al-Issa said spy cameras are banned and that his department punishes those involved in the illegal act of their smuggling. The fine for any smuggling attempt is 300 percent of the item’s price.

In the past also, the department foiled a bid to bring in a large number of spy cameras secretly fitted as buttons on dresses and hidden in fire alarm systems.

The spy camera was banned in the Kingdom when it was found that it could be used to violate the privacy of individuals.
