ABHA: The horrendous crime in which two brothers attacked their family members, killing their mother, have shocked both Saudis and expatriates.
The security spokesman at the Interior Ministry revealed the circumstances of the tragic incident, in the early hours of the morning in the Hamra District, east of Riyadh.
Khaled and Saleh, sons of Ibrahim bin Ali Al-Arini, stabbed their mother to death with a machete and sharp knives, and injured their father and brother Suleiman with stab wounds in an attempt to kill them.
Psychiatrist Dr. Fahad Saud Al-Yahya said that one single factor cannot explain the tragedy.
“And if we exempted drugs, which is a great disaster for human brain, we have to look at the subject from different aspects.
“For more than 30 years, we have been living in conditions that facilitate accusing others of blasphemy, either explicitly or implicitly, and this has been the golden gate to allow lies, slander and exaggeration.”
After the Palestinian issue cooled, the “awakening” or “Al-Sahwah,” emerged to keep up with what was then called “jihad in Afghanistan,” instrumental in recruiting a large number of youths.
It is wrong to discuss the Daesh phenomenon without Al-Qaeda, and Al-Qaeda without Al-Sahwah and the “Jihad.” This is the daily bread that has grown and increased with Al-Qaeda’s activity in Chechnya and Bosnia.
“In my opinion, this land has been paved for Daesh, and it is the maximum level/stage of Al-Qaeda and Al-Sahwah.
“And here comes the common psychological, environmental, family, social and educational factors that make people more likely to adopt the Daesh approach,” Al-Yayah said.
There is a well-known psychological phenomenon, extremism or “Hyper-religiosity” where it is the only sign of illness and no other sign appears (like seeing things that don’t exist or hearing voices can’t be heard by others, etc.)
Mono-delusion is where the patient believes that he holds the key to the reasoning and certainty, and that those who oppose him are fakes and liars.
This misguidance along with religious background facilitates the process of accusing people of blasphemy, which makes it easier for the patient to kill the people closest to him.
Al-Yahya said that the irony in the twins’ case is that there is a psychological disorder/phenomenon known as bilateral misguidance (Folie Adexx) where the two parties are usually brothers or mother and daughter, or close friends.
There is also a delusion that involves a group of people (Folie a plusieurs) and usually includes extremist groups such as the “Jim Jones” group that practiced mass suicide and sacrifice in Guyana 40 years ago.
The followers/members of this group were confused people.
Psychiatrist Dr. Abdul Rahman Al-Subaihi stressed that the followers of terrorist organizations have changed approaches, as adherents of takfirist ideology use it as a means to put pressure on young people.
Al-Subaihi explained that they are looking at the ugliest methods to create a murder scenario that shakes society the most, as they approach young people through social media sites where, at first, they direct their victims to kill infidels, then relatives of soldiers, and then brothers and parents.
Al-Subaihi pointed out that they agitate their followers through the implementation of agendas that promote martyrdom, paradise and houris.
He stressed that it’s important for the country and the Interior Ministry to change its approach to the opposite side, and implement programs aimed at changing young people’s thinking toward what the community wants, and protect them from being a source of terror and destruction.
He described terrorists as sleeper cells that move naturally in the community, waiting for orders from their terrorist cells to carry out certain operations in a certain way at a certain time, and when these cells are exposed to lethal strikes, they seek revenge in such cases.
These cells could easily have used weapons, but they preferred a heinous murder to shake the whole of society and provoke public opinion.
