RIYADH: Madinah Gov. Prince Faisal bin Salman recently honored Hussam Ahmed Shukri — the first Arab to dive into the Arctic sea, going to a depth of 25 meters and staying under for 35 minutes in temperatures falling 28 degrees below zero.
The expedition to the North Pole by the Saudi citizen which was undertaken in April this year lasted 27 days.
Congratulating Shukri’s outstanding performance, Prince Faisal said the achievement reflects the persistence of Saudi youths to overcome obstacles and reach their goal while harnessing their dynamic skills, talents and knowledge.
Shukry expressed his thanks to the governor for “giving full support for the success in my career.”
Born in 1986 in Madinah, Shukri holds a master’s degree in human resources from Al-Faisal University and works as an instructor at the Training Academy for the employees of the Jeddah municipality. He also works as a “vocational guidance” lecturer at the Human Resources Fund in the Holy City.
Shukri has many hobbies such as horse riding, football and paragliding, and he started practicing diving in 2006. He was awarded a divers’ instructor license from the PADI organization in 2014, and also received their Elite Medal for Trainers. He was also presented a certificate by the ‘North Pole Circle’ for his outstanding performance in diving.
“We wanted to achieve something unique. In our society, there’s often a negative perception about Saudi youths that they’re irresponsible and aimless in life. I will keep telling my story because I want to represent the Saudi youths in the best way possible,” Shukri added.
