MAKKAH: Boy Scouts have been tapped to help the Ministry of Commerce and Investment (MCI) enforce price and quality control measures on consumer goods in the holy city during the Ramadan month.
The task is in addition to serving pilgrims and visitors, which the Saudi Arabian Boy Scouts Association had been doing in past years, the Saudi Press Agency said.
Mohammed Bilal, Ramadan camp commander, said a number of scout units are being rotated to support the MCI in monitoring prices of consumer goods, ensuring that the rule on price tags is followed, and checking expiry dates of food products being sold in the market.
Bilal said the scouts were given training by the MCI n identifying damaged goods and food unfit for human consumption, detecting substandard scales used in outlets and points of sale, and the procedure in seizure or confiscation and destruction of products deemed unfit for human consumption.
