HAIL: While Riyadh police announced the arrest of a child abuser on a live show, the Ministry of Labor and Social Development said through its spokesman, Khalid Aba Al-Kheil, that protecting children from abuse is one of its responsibilities.
The ministry stated that it will pursue anyone who violates children’s rights either physically, verbally or psychologically, in the first response to the video clip that showed a child being verbally abused by the imam of a mosque.
Aba Al-Kheil said that any violation of children’s laws, which were issued under a royal decree, will be pursued by the ministry in coordination and cooperation with judicial and security bodies. The ministry will not be lenient with anyone who harms children either morally, physically or psychologically.
A source at the Ministry of Labor and Social Development revealed that the ministry followed up and monitored the verbal abuse of a child near a mosque, which is a stark violation of the Child Protection Law. The source pointed out that the ministry started investigating the personality of the abuser and discovered his place of residence in coordination with public security, before arresting him and taking legal procedures to deal with such a violation that contradicts public morals and Islamic Shariah.
The viral video clip showed a little boy speaking to an imam and the imam answered with an abusive statement which incited the anger of many Twitter users, who demanded harsh punishment against this imam because he should be a role model to the thousands of people who follow him on social media websites.
Lawyer Abdulrahman Allahim was surprised at the delay of the Ministry of Islamic Affairs in dealing with the imam. He pointed out that the ministry should have reacted promptly and stopped the imam from leading prayers. He said his apology and repentance isn’t legally logical, because repentance is related to the afterlife; in this life security authorities should arrest him and refer him to the Bureau of Investigation and Public Prosecution for investigation.
