The Ministry of Culture and Information renewed its directions to Saudi newspapers about limiting use of the title, “Sheikh,” to the heads of tribes and students of legislative sciences. It called on the media not to publish an advertisement of appreciation that bears the title without going back to authorities in Saudi governorates.

The ministry stressed the importance of limiting the title to students of legislative sciences, those who work in the judiciary system and heads of tribes.

According to the local media, the circular was issued because of the increased use of the title in social circles, which contradicts what this title characterizes from a social and scientific point of view.

The reports said that there have been many cases of fraud because of the inappropriate use of titles.

The reports said the common use of the title has stripped the term of its meaning.

This title, they said, is supposed to be limited to official dealings and to those who deserve it. Its common use in councils and business dealings is incorrect and is what has led to the renewal of this warning.

Many merchants in the Kingdom use this title for this social status that has existed throughout history and they can buy anything even titles, said local news reports.

The Ministry of Culture and Information issued its circular on June 2 which stated the importance of abiding by royal instructions about limiting the usage of the title.
