JEDDAH: A large number of Saudis are being attracted by the ongoing training programs in the mobile phone sector, and women are particularly upbeat because of the new career opportunity.
The Technical and Vocational Training Corporation (TVTC) has commenced free training programs in cooperation with the Human Resources Development Fund (HRDF) in mobile maintenance, sales and customer services for both male and females, in addition to specialized programs in the telecom industry.
Suha Bashr, a graduate, expressed happiness and optimism when asked by this reporter about the government move to indigenize the sector and said it is a big opportunity for women to earn money.
“Very few Saudi women were working in the cell phone industry until now. The decision of the government has provided motivation, especially for women, to enter this field and prove that anything is possible,” she said.
Reem, a student, hailed the government move for 100 percent Saudization in the telecom sector as a “step in the right direction.”
“I am receiving training in sales management and customer services to add value to my country. This new law provides females an opportunity to be leaders and have an impact in an industry that is usually male dominated.”
According to a local daily, many people, both men and women, have participated in the training programs so far.
In Taif alone, the first stage of the training had around 100 participants in sales management training, while 45 took lessons in customer service. It provided them with short and advanced courses to plan and outline their own objectives while performing tasks in the cell phone industry. In the second stage of the program, the numbers grew, with 193 participants trained in the mobile repair and maintenance sector. Moreover, these specialized programs will help provide 20,000 jobs for Saudis in this sector, the report said.
Saudis aged above 18 can register on the TVTC’s e-portal to attend basic courses in mobile maintenance, sales management and customer service in addition to advanced maintenance programs for specialized companies.
Besides the new programs, the TVTC is providing diplomas and bachelors in the telecommunication sector in Technical Colleges and Colleges of Communication and Information Technology programs.
“Institutions that provide advanced level programs in telecommunication industry can facilitate training and leadership development and help develop more male and female Saudi leaders in this field,” said Hamza, an electronics and telecommunications engineer.
All the firms in the mobile industry across the Kingdom are required to ensure a 50 percent Saudization rate within three months and 100 percent in six month.
