RIYADH: The Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage (SCTNH) in collaboration with the Ministry of Islamic Affairs (MOIA) and Al-Turath Foundation will work together to empower historic mosques to discharge their social and religious roles.
The decision was made during a workshop on “caring for historic mosques” held here recently to review a number of issues related to the care and preservation of historic mosques, an SCTNH official said on Tuesday.
The workshop, chaired by Meshari Al-Naeem, superintendent general of the Urban Heritage Center, discussed a number of criteria and measures on dealing with historic mosques planned to be restored.
Experts at the workshop recommended the formation of a joint technical committee to undertake coordination in respect to the status of historic mosques that are planned to be restored and rehabilitated, and discussed endowment cases and obstacles that may face the efforts of caring for the historic mosques.
They also discussed the heritage plan for caring for the historic mosques in the provinces.
Moreover, representatives at the workshop discussed in detail issues related to caring for historic mosques, special procedures for endowment, historic mosque funding criteria, and joining the efforts of the concerned parties to ensure the performance of their religious, social and cultural roles.
Al-Turath Heritage Foundation is a non-profit organization for the preservation and caring of national heritage in the Kingdom. It has organized a number of heritage training programs that include a course on architecture in collaboration with the Prince’s School of Traditional Arts, London (2007); urban heritage preservation program with Research Center for Islamic History, Art and Culture (IRCICA), Istanbul, Turkey (2010); Italian universities and several other educational and academic organizations (2011); summer program in collaboration with IRCICA and a number of universities (2013) to better equip experts from the Kingdom for caring for the national heritage.
