JEDDAH: The Jeddah Municipality cleared over three million tons of garbage from different districts of the city and distributed 1,350 containers to collect leftover food in the last six months.
The waste in different forms such as vegetable, medical, construction and also damaged furnitures and cars, Sami Khalaf, director-general of hygiene and cleaning, Jeddah Municipality, said.
“A total of 12,412 damaged cars were marked within 12 sub-municipalities; owners of 5,136 cars were given notices, out of which only 2,766 owners responded,” he said.
Also, nine pits containing waste material were also closed by the municipality in Khumra area south of Jeddah, he said.
“A total of 1,350 containers were distributed in different districts of Jeddah and 180 containers in Jeddah municipalities to save food,” he said.
The municipality has been working on several projects to preserve leftover food and all restaurants and event organizers have been told to cooperate with charities and mosques for food distribution among the poor and needy, said Khalaf.
