The Jeddah municipality has begun using the "defamation" sanction against firms and shops who commit violations of the labor laws. Previously, the municipality imposed fines on offending parties, but did not disclose the names of the violators. Mohammed Al-Buqami, spokesman for the municipality, said that the municipality would not hesitate to apply defamation sanctions against both small and large establishments.

He said the municipality has its own legal department and will not take any action without considering all legal aspects. “All violators including shops, restaurants, and small and large establishments will be included in the defamation sanctions, whether the violation is minor or major,” he added.

Ahmad Zarraa, lawyer and legal counselor, said that disclosing the names of violators is a legal procedure provided for in the relevant laws on condition that the authorities conclude after thorough verification and investigation that violation has occurred.
