RIYADH: In a rare surgery, a medical team successfully removed a nail from the kidney of a patient in the Eastern Province last week.
The operation took place at the King Khaled General Hospital in Hafr Al-Batin to save the life of a citizen who had a nail in his kidney.
An official from the hospital said that the two-hour surgery, which was performed on the citizen, went well without causing any damage to the kidney.
The patient, he said, is now in a stable condition and would improve in due course. The hospital is run by the Ministry of Health.
There are seven hospitals in Hafr Al-Batin to provide health services to patients, with a capacity of 1,000 beds. It includes 300 beds at the King Khaled General Hospital, 200 beds at the Hafr Al-Batin Central Hospital, 300 at the Maternity and Children’s Hospital, 50 at the Qaisumah Hospital, 50 at the Mental Hospital, 50 at the Sariya General Hospital and 50 at the Rehabilitation Hospital. In addition to these hospitals, there are 40 primary health care centers in the province.
Last week, a rare surgery to remove a tumor from the lower jaw of an African expatriate was successfully performed at the King Fahd Hospital, which is also run by the MoH in Jeddah.
The patient came to the hospital complaining about pus oozing out of a tooth. Initial medical reports revealed that the patient needed a complicated surgery. Accordingly, a multidisciplinary team was appointed for the job.
The patient’s blood pressure and glucose level were very high and the team had to give special medication to regulate them, said the official.
“There was severe inflammation in the jaw as well as in the chin, and heavy swelling of the head. However, he is on the path to recovery now,” said the official.
The patient, who is in his sixties, said the hospital helped him get rid of the tumor, which was troubling him for quite some time.
The government gives top priority to health in serving citizens and expats. Direct spending on health services takes up 7 percent of the Kingdom’s budget.
This means that every individual is covered by $500. The rest of the budget is spent on other expenses, including salaries amounting SR10 million annually.
