Sri Lankan Ambassador Mohamed Hussain Mohammed said the new government under the leadership of President Maithripala Sirisena would give a fair deal to all communities living on the island.

The envoy was addressing the expat community on the occasion of the 67th anniversary of Sri Lankan Independence Day in Riyadh on Wednesday.

A large number of people from the expatriate community, including schoolchildren and Saudi businessmen, attended the colorful ceremony organized by the Sri Lankan mission.

The envoy said the new government is seeking to create new political culture and economic system, as well as promoting communal harmony in the country.

Saudi Arabia is the top destination for Sri Lankan expatriates seeking employment opportunities. Last year, the expat community in the Kingdom contributed to their island nation’s economy with nearly $6 billion in foreign exchange remittances.

The event kicked off with the envoy unfurling the national flag, followed by singing of the national anthem of the country.

The recital of Jayamangala Gatha came next with a two-minute observance in memory of the fallen heroes.

The traditional oil lamp was lit by the head of the mission, diplomats and prominent community members to mark the beginning of the National Day celebrations in the Kingdom.

The ambassador also distributed certificates and mementos to the students of the Sri Lankan International School who took part in the singing of the Jaya Mangala Gatha.

Meanwhile, Consul General Adam Bawa Uthumalebbe hoisted the national flag in Jeddah. A large number of expatriates in the Western Province attended the function.

Typical Sri Lankan dishes were served to guests at both functions held in Riyadh and Jeddah.

They included kiribath with katta sambol, kevum, dodal and kokis.
