RIYADH: A 72-year-old woman from Riyadh became to latest victim of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) coronavirus on Friday, bringing the total number of people succumbing to the contagion to 475 since June 2012 in the Kingdom.
Four people, including a two-year-old child, from the capital tested positive to the virus, taking the total number of infected patients to 1,091 in Saudi Arabia so far. According to the Health Ministry, 588 patients have recovered from the illness and 28 are currently taking treatment in various hospitals in the Kingdom.
The four new cases included two Saudi males, including the infant, and two women including an expatriate.
According to experts, the virus can affect anyone — as young as one-year-old and as as 99. Those exposed to camels and health care personnel, who do not follow recommended infection-control precautions, are vulnerable, they said.
