Two people were injured and 16 others were evacuated when a fire tore across the second floor of a five-story residential building of the Bakhsh Hospital in Jeddah Friday morning.

On receiving a call for help, Civil Defense dispatched teams of rescuers and fire fighters with sufficient number of men and machinery, a source at the Makkah Civil Defense said. The Red Crescent was also notified.

Thick smoke was reportedly seen coming out of the kitchen on the second floor which housed 18 medical workers and their families.

While no loss of life was reported, 16 people were evacuated to the top of the building. Four people were taken out of the building and two suffering from suffocation were handed over to the Red Crescent.

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire.
