JEDDAH: The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has a special high-level delegation currently visiting Pakistan and Azad Kashmir until May 12 to assess the situation on the ground.
The delegation, which arrived in the region on Monday, is led by Abdullah bin Abdulrahman Alim, assistant secretary general for political affairs and special envoy for Jammu and Kashmir. Other members of the delegation include senior officials of the OIC secretariat, Islamic Development Bank, Islamic Solidarity Fund and Islamic Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization.
During the visit, the delegation will meet the leadership and senior government officials in Islamabad and Muzaffarabad. The delegation will also visit the Line of Control and meet with the representatives of the Kashmiri people, according to a press release issued by the OIC.
Pakistan Consul General Shehryar Akbar Khan met last week with Alim to discuss issues facing people in the region, and to express support for the delegation and the rights of the inhabitants of the area.
The Final Communiqué of the 13th Islamic Summit Conference held recently in Istanbul, Turkey, reaffirmed its support for the people of Jammu and Kashmir in their bid for self-determination.
The summit reiterated its position that the Jammu and Kashmir issue was at the heart of the conflict between Pakistan and India and that settlement was needed to bring peace to the region.
The conference also called on India to implement various UN resolutions on the region, which stipulates free and fair elections; and reminded the international community of its commitment to fulfill promises made to the people over the past 68 years.
The Islamic summit expressed concern over what it saw as the “indiscriminate use of force and the blatant violations of human rights committed by Indian security forces in the Indian-occupied part of Jammu and Kashmir province, which have claimed the lives of thousands of innocent unarmed civilians.”
