The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is willing to find a political solution to the Central African Republic (CAR) crisis and is ready to intervene in the humanitarian field to support economic development, according to OIC Secretary-General Iyad Ameen Madani.

Madani emphasized the need to establish a national dialogue that satisfies all parties and added that the success of national dialogue will undoubtedly contribute to the return of peace and security in the country.

These statements came during a meeting with the President of the Central African Republic, Catherine Samba-Panza, and Prime Minister Nzapayeke.

A high-level ministerial delegation from the OIC on Tuesday met with the president and prime minister during a visit of solidarity to assess the situation in the CAR, an observer state at the OIC, that is being torn apart by conflict.

The delegation, which includes foreign ministers from OIC member states and the OIC secretary-general and is led by Lounceny Fall, chair of the Council of Foreign Ministers and the foreign minister of Guinea, also met with the president of the National Transitional Council and representatives from civil society, the French Army Operation, “Sangaris,” the African Union and the United Nations Development Fund.

The delegation also visited the Central Mosque in Bangui, where Muslims have sought shelter.

The delegation listened to citizens who sought protection in the mosque and stressed that the OIC General Secretariat and members of the delegation will seriously endeavor to reach a satisfactory solution to end the conflict.

The delegation is also scheduled to visit other key officials in the Republics of Congo and Chad who are concerned with developments as part of a comprehensive peace initiative launched by the OIC for the warn-torn country.

An emergency ministerial meeting was held on Feb. 20 by the Executive Committee of the OIC at the headquarters of the General Secretariat in Jeddah. During the meeting, a decision was made to send a high-level delegation to the CAR to assess the dangerous situation prevailing on the ground and to show solidarity with the Muslim community, which has fallen victim to violence and serious human rights violations.
