King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, in collaboration with the Saudi Center for Organ Transplants, will be launching a three-day awareness campaign on Nov. 21 on organ transplantation and donation.
More than 90 students, both male and female, from the medical stream at the university have come forward voluntarily to support the campaign and ensure its continuity.
Hifa Misfar Al-Qathmai, assistant professor and consultant in anesthesia and intensive care at the university and head of the organizing committee of the campaign, said the main goal of this campaign was to spread awareness and educate the public about the importance of organ donation and how it will help the beneficiary patients.
She said the campaign was being launched keeping in mind the guidelines covering religious, social, health and economic aspects and issues related to organ donation and to challenge commonplace perception. The awareness campaign will take place in public places, corniche, markets, schools and the military sector.
She said that a similar exercise will be launched in Makkah and Taif. The campaign will be held twice a year to create an understanding and facilitate communication between community members, patients, their families and medical staff.
Other members of the organizing committee include Dr. Amal Ibrahim Samadha and Zafar Ahmed Al-Ghamdi from the Saudi Center for Organ Transplant, Dr. Faisal Abdul Rahim Shaheen, Dr. Saleh Abdullah Al–Shari and student, traffic and health representatives.
The main objective behind launching the campaign is to alleviate the suffering of large number of people suffering from organ failure and help them by opening the doors for donors and volunteers. Social media, newspapers and television channels will also be used to further the campaign.
The campaign will be launched on Dec. 12 in Makkah and Taif on Dec. 26.
