A wooden footbridge located on one of the busiest highways — Haramain Express Way in the Industrial City in south Jeddah — collapsed on Thursday after a high-stacked truck rammed into it.

The authorities said no causalities resulted from the accident although three cars were damaged.

“The bridge was closed to pedestrians a month ago for maintenance, so there were no casualties,” the Jeddah Municipality said in a statement late Thursday night in the after the accident.

The bridge was partially damaged and the relevant authorities have arrested the truck driver who was responsible for the incident, said Mohammed Al-Boqaimi, spokesman of the Jeddah Municipality.

The footbridge connects the neighborhoods in Rawabi district and was built some 27 years ago to facilitate pedestrian movement in the area.

Citizens of the neighborhood have criticized the municipality’s reluctance to maintain wooden bridges in the city despite frequent complaints that have been reported by the inhabitants.

Recently, the municipality decided to develop and renovate 25 footbridges in the city with the participation of private sector in terms of advertisements.
