Pakistan is seeking greater coordinated action by nations around the world to tackle terror organizations, the country’s envoy said here last week.

Ambassador Manzoor ul Haq made the comments after an extraordinary meeting of the executive committee of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) headquarters on Sunday. The meeting was convened to discuss the menace of terrorism and its challenges to global peace and stability.

Haq said terrorism threatens people across the world, in every society. The international community has not yet been able to handle it in an effective manner, he said.

“We support multilateral efforts to tackle the issue. Pakistan has a clear approach to terrorism. At the moment, our armed forces are in the middle of taking very decisive action against the terrorists who have been trying to create instability in Pakistan,” he said.

He said that the OIC meeting had been called at an opportune time because the entire Muslim world was under serious threat. “It is high time that the issue is addressed in its entirety and with a collective approach,” he said.

In a meeting with journalists after the OIC meeting, Haq discussed several community issues including the consulate’s facilities, school problems, current trade issues, projects undertaken by the OIC and Islamic Development Bank, and the country’s growing relations with Saudi Arabia.

He welcomed the amnesty for prisoners recently announced by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman and said Pakistan would help to pay some repatriation costs if required.

Pakistanis must be educated about Saudi Arabia’s visa laws so that they are not duped by unscrupulous agents, he said.

Haq said trade and investment needs to be improved. There are opportunities in the cotton industry, surgical equipment and sports goods. About 30 Saudi businessmen are going to visit Pakistan soon to look at investment possibilities, he said.

“Our efforts will be to keep an eye on quality control. Pakistan is a liberal country and with its geographic position can become a corridor between West and East.”

Haq said the embassy would also be looking closely at the country’s schools in the Kingdom and ensure they operate efficiently and without interference.
