RIYADH: The vibrant Pakistani community in Saudi Arabia celebrated their country’s Independence Day on Friday with simplicity, zeal and fervor.

The day began with flag-hoisting ceremonies at the Pakistani Embassy in Riyadh and the Pakistani Consulate in Jeddah.

Sen. Iqbal Zafar Jhagra, secretary-general of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) was a key guest at the embassy event in Riyadh.

Ambassador Manzur Ul Haq unfurled the national flag at a well-attended ceremony at the embassy premises in Riyadh. Messages of Pakistani President Mamnoon Hussain and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif were read out at the event.

“This Independence Day reminds us of the struggle and sacrifices of our forefathers for a separate land. Now it is our responsibility to turn our country into an enlightened and strong welfare state,” said Haq.

In his address, Jhagra congratulated members of the Pakistani community in Saudi Arabia and highlighted the government’s success in Operation of Zarb-e-Azab. He paid rich tributes to the government’s firm resolve and the sacrifices rendered by armed forces and police in the fight against terrorism.

In Jeddah, Consul General Aftab A. Khokher unfurled the national flag at his residence. Prominent members of the community attended the event.

In his message, the consul general said: “On this day we renew commitment to make Pakistan a strong, prosperous and progressive country.”

Addressing the Pakistani community, Khokher said: “As ambassadors of the country, all expatriates must keep the Pakistani flag high. Be united and disciplined and work hard for the development of both the Kingdom and Pakistan.”

National songs were also played on the occasion.
