Col. Fahd Al-Ghannam, spokesman for Madinah police, said Saturday that at about 2 p.m. on Friday, a security patrol at the Yanbu-Madinah checkpoint noticed a Hyundai making a U-turn before reaching the checkpoint and go off in a different direction.

When a patrol pursued the car and asked the driver to stop, he threw a bottle containing a liquid at the windshield of the police car blocking the view.

The driver refused to stop despite being ordered to do so repeatedly by the security patrol. The patrol then fired three warning shots but they went unheeded.

The police then shot at the tires of the car in an attempt to stop it. A stray bullet hit the back seat and another went through the roof of the car. Finally, the driver stopped the car.

He was discovered to be a Burmese national. He had sustained light injuries and was taken to hospital.

A passenger of African origin was found dead, crouching in the back seat. He had received gunshots.

The car was a rented vehicle. The police are investigating the case.
