Several citizens and residents in the Kingdom have reacted angrily over the services of airline companies in the country, with some calling for a clear list of rules to protect the rights of passengers.

Many said that they have had to deal with flight delays, lost baggage, reservations canceled without notice and injuries — with no explanation or fair compensation.

They said that airlines often place their interests first rather than that of paying customers. They have appealed to the authorities to ensure that airlines abide by the Warsaw Convention, which regulates liability with regard to passenger safety, goods and baggage.

Saad Al-Ghamdi, a commuter, said he recently suffered a six-hour delay at King Abdul Aziz International Airport without receiving any apology or compensation.

He said the authorities should clarify the rights of travelers and then disseminate this information to the public through the media.

Muhammad Marzouk, another passenger, said: “Although I had confirmed my reservation, when I arrived at the airport I was surprised to find that there was no seat on the plane for me. I stayed at the airport for seven hours, and then another three days at a hotel before getting a flight. The management paid me SR1,200 as compensation for the flight delay.”

Saeed Al-Jandabi said: “After traveling from King Abdul Aziz International Airport in Jeddah to an outside destination, I found that my baggage had been lost. I stayed at the airport for two days, but it was all in vain.”

Naif Al-Juhani, who is disabled, said that he was forced to stay at the airport for more than two hours because his plane was delayed and received no compensation or an apology.
