RIYADH: The Civil Defense team in Makkah evacuated 64 Umrah pilgrims from 29 apartments on Wednesday as a preventive measure.
“We have relocated the pilgrims to safer places,” said Col. Abdullah bin Eid Al-Qurashi, director of safety of the Civil Defense management in Makkah.
He said that during an inspection tour by a Civil Defense team, they disconnected power supply to 12 more apartments since it could have caused short circuits. The team, he said, also visited 49 warehouses and disconnected power supplies in five of those for the safety of pilgrims.
Al-Quraishi said that from the beginning of the holy month, the team has made 1,897 field trips to pilgrim accommodations, warehouses, shops and restaurants. The teams went to all parts of Makkah, including the Grand Mosque and all licensed agencies and outlets around the Haram.
Meanwhile, another Civil Defense team in Makkah headed by Maj. Ali Ahmad bin Afif has been assigned to monitor vehicle emissions around the Grand Mosque area in order to protect pilgrims from air pollution.
Bin Afif said his teams would use sophisticated instruments to monitor air pollutants. “Vehicle emissions can cause respiratory problems for pilgrims,” the official said.
