Saudi Aramco has recently funded a study carried out by an international company to regulate trucks traffic in the Eastern Province.

The Saudi Society for Traffic Safety (Salamah) hopes to address the problem of truck congestion on the province’s highways and streets.

Sultan Hamoud Al-Zahrani, secretary-general of the Traffic Safety Committee in the province, said that the project was recently awarded to an international company. The company is expected to provide short- and long-term solutions to reduce the risk of trucks on the highways.

“Salamah will be presenting four new studies about the regulation of trucks entry to the city’s streets and highways during the next Traffic Safety Forum,” said Al-Zahrani. “One study focuses on modifying trucks’ paths, another looks at intensifying control of highway traffic. Another study determines an exclusive road for trucks and their exact speed on the highway.”

Al-Zahrani praised Riyadh’s experience in regulating truck traffic on all the city roads. He said it contributed to relieving bottlenecks.

Col. Ali Al-Zahrani, spokesman of the Eastern Province Traffic Police, said these studies come in the light of the large number of trucks entering the cities. “We are working on a project that will raise awareness among truck drivers,” he said.
