Asir police are investigating a citizen’s complaint against her husband claiming that he tried to run her over with a car.

Safeya Hussain, 21, said that just as she was trying to get into the car upon her husband’s persuasion, he pressed his foot on the gas pedal causing the car to accelerate dangerously and consequently resulted in her falling out of the car as the door was still open. She said that she nearly died during the episode.

Safeya was taken to the Asir Central Hospital following the incident where spokesman for Asir’s Social Affairs Ministry, Ali Asmari confirmed the receipt of a report of domestic violence stating that the victim had nearly been run over by her husband. A protection team from the Social Affairs was sent to the battered woman to take her and her baby to a shelter but she refused to go demanding to stay at the hospital instead. She also refused to go to her father’s house saying that her father and brothers treated her badly.

Lt. Col. Abdullah Al-Shaathan, media spokesman for Asir police, also confirmed that they had received a report from Safeya stating that her husband tried to kill her.

He noted that the case is under investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the event.

Meanwhile, Safeya maintains that she is the victim and said that her neighbors bore witness to the event and other forms of abuse she continuously suffered at the hands of her husband.

She complained that she was suffering acute hardship; she was destitute and penniless, not having enough to provide for her baby’s basic needs.

She also explained that her child, Hussein, does not have any official papers to prove his identity after his father abandoned them. She claims that he never came back to check on his son’s status.

Safeya appealed for protection for herself, her child Hussein and the unborn baby and asked to be sent to a family shelter. She also demanded her rights from her husband and brothers, who she said were ruthless.
