His Highness the President of King Abdul Aziz City for Science and Technology Prince Dr. Turki bin Saud bin Mohammad Al Saud today opened the activities of Science and Technology Week 2016, which is held at the KACST in Riyadh, in the presence of a number of KACST officials.
His Highness stated that KACST annually organizes the Science and Technology Week in Riyadh, and a number of regions in the Kingdom, with the goal to introduce science, technology and innovation to the new generation, and encourage students to engage in the fields of science, technology and innovation.
The aim is to build a knowledge-based vibrant society, as shown in the Kingdom’s 2030 Vision and the National Transformation Program 2020.
He stressed the importance of keeping the young generation interested in science, technology and innovation because these are the keys to building a qualified community that can innovate and compete.
His highness added that the Kingdom currently relies on its own capabilities in industry, instead of depending on oil as a main source.
Dr. Turki say that we could see a Saudi win the Nobel prize in the future as two scientists from research centers that have joint ventures with KACST won the Nobel prize.
He indicated that science, technology and innovation are the most important factors, and this week is one of the most important events that encourages interest in science and technology.
About the private sectors’ interaction with innovations, His Highness explained that “Science and Technology Week 2016 witnessed the participation of many institutions that are interested in youth and innovation, which is encouraging, and we are keen at KACST because the responsibility is mutual and not confined to government institutions, and everyone has a responsibility to participate in the rising of this country.”
On the other side, the exhibition consists of more than 16 pavilions representing institutes and research centers and their programs, as well as service departments that provide support services and information about patents and scientific research, also giving advice and technical support for innovators.
Also included are many interactive experiments, satellite images, and multimedia that display many scientific and technical topics, and products that KACST carried out at research centers, in helping visitors to gain a general perception of areas of scientific issues and fundamentals, as well as the development of scientific thinking and research skills.
The first day of the exhibition witnessed a high turnout of school students from colleges, universities and scientific institutes, as well as a number of specialists and other interested people.
Science and Technology Week 2016 started on October 9 and will continue till October 21. Visitors are welcome from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on the first week for male students, and the same time on the next week for female students, while from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. it is open for everyone to attend.
