RIYADH: Preventive action is crucial in the fight against drugs as it will stop 50 percent of people from addiction, Abdulilah Al-Sharif, president of National Anti-Drug Commission (Nibras), has said.
“According to studies and the recent conference held in New York, greater focus should be on the preventive aspect to protect society from drugs,” he was quoted as saying by local media on Friday.
Al-Sharif was speaking during a workshop attended by the teams of various provinces in the Kingdom in the presence of directors of anti-drugs bodies here recently.
Commending the efforts of the authorities concerned for foiling drug smuggling and fighting against peddlers, he said the last two months witnessed the least drug smuggling and addiction cases.
“Now is the time to intensify preventive work through the Nibras, under the patronage of Crown Prince Mohammad bin Naif, who is also the chairman of the national anti-drugs committee,” said Al-Sharif.
He said drugs have become a common phenomenon and everyone is worried because of its consequences, including destruction of the minds of young people, break-up of families, wastage of money and rise in the crime rate.
Al-Sharif appreciated the efforts by the anti-drug directorates in the Kingdom’s provinces, Border Guard, governorates, and various ministries in curbing the curbing the menace.
