JAZAN: A comatose prisoner, suffering from gangrene, died in Sabia General Hospital. The family of the patient is learned to have refused to receive the body.
A committee has been formed to investigate the cause of his death and identify the reasons behind the deterioration of his condition in the prison.
The inmate has spent the past 12 days in a coma following a diabetic stroke, and he was in the hospital’s intensive care unit with his feet cuffed to the bed.
A committee was formed by “Trahum” for the care of prisoners in Jazan, to assess the status of the prisoner before his death. Ali Ibn Musa Zala, the committee’s chairman confirmed that two members were assigned to quickly check the health developments of the prisoner, track his status and coordinate with specialists at the Directorate General of Health Affairs and the department of the region’s prisons to take immediate and appropriate action, and to provide him with the necessary medical care.
The spokesman for the Directorate General of Prisons, Abdullah Al-Harbi, told Sabq that the prisoner had been suffering from diabetes. After he suffered a diabetic incident, he was transferred to Sabia General Hospital. He was unresponsive for two days and was then transferred to the intensive care unit as his condition deteriorated.
Commenting on pictures showing the prisoner in Sabia General Hospital with his legs riddled with gangrene and tied with cuffs, Jazan health officials said the procedures in regards to inmates receiving health care in hospitals in the region fall under the instructions of the Ministry of Interior.
The prisoners do not enter these hospitals within the official appointment system and routine operations, but they are directly sedated depending on their circumstances and sentences, the officials said.
Sabq learned from security sources that the prisoner died the age of 29 years. He was in jail for a drug case and was transferred immediately to a hospital for treatment, and died of his illness.
