JEDDAH: Lawyer Abdulkarim bin Saud Al-Qadi has warned people against creating provocative hashtags and fake accounts on social networking sites as such actions can be considered cybercrime.
Al-Qadi said in a statement that Article 6 of the Saudi Criminal Law stipulates that social media users who act in violation of the public decency laws or who aim to spread corruption shall be subject to imprisonment for a period not exceeding five years and a fine not exceeding SR3 million or to either punishment.
He added that the punishment includes any person who commits any kind of cybercrime such as production, preparation, transmission, or storage of material impinging on public order, religious values, public morals and privacy.
Recently, some people created provocative hashtags which contravene the values and customs of the Kingdom. They also created fake accounts to spread false news aimed at disturbing public order.
Others impersonated public figures and made fake statements designed to drive a wedge between citizens.
