JEDDAH: An earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale hit Tabuk at 4:46 a.m. on Monday, with tremors felt in nearby provinces, and also in Sinai, Cairo, southern parts of Jordan and Palestine affected.

The Saudi Geological Survey said its seismic monitoring devices registered a series of tremors, with the highest at 4.8 in the Gulf of Aqaba.

A British seismic monitoring station, meanwhile, said Egypt was hit by an earthquake of 4.8 on the Richter Scale, some 8 km from the Red Sea town of Nowibi.

Light tremors were also felt in Cairo, Giza and other provinces, it said.

Zohair Nawab, head of the Saudi Geological Survey, said seismic monitoring devices registered earthquake activity in the Gulf of Aqaba Gulf on Monday morning, some 17 km west of Magna town, at 4.8 on the Richter Scale, which was followed by a series of 85 quakes.

Brig. Gen, Mamduh Al-Inizi, media spokesman of the Civil Defense in Tabuk Region, said that the operation room did not receive any reports about tremors.
