JEDDAH: The Criminal Court in Qatif has sentenced a man to a 36-month jail term and 370 lashes for blackmailing and raping a girl, according to a local media report on Monday.
The sentence includes the confiscation of his mobile and SIM card used in the crime. The value of both items would be recorded in the accounts of the Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency, sources were quoted as saying.
The accused confessed to the crime, with the court saying that the sentence was based on a Hadith compiled by Abu Dawood, which states that it is not permissible to harm a fellow Muslim. It was also based on a Qur’anic verse stating that there would be severe punishment for indecent acts in the world and the Hereafter.
The man was also found guilty of contravening the country’s cyber laws, which had resulted in the confiscation of the equipment used in the commission of the crime. Since he did not have a previous criminal record, he was sentenced to two years and an additional eight months for having illicit intercourse. He will receive the lashes in batches of 70, the court stated.
