JUBAIL: A total of 99 students, representing the 18th group of the Al-Imam Asem Intermediate School for Qur’an recitation, were honored in a graduation ceremony held on Monday at the Conference Hall at the Jubail Industrial City, under the patronage of Adnan bin Ayesh Al-Alonai, chief executive of the Royal Commission for Jubail (RCJ).
The ceremony began with a Qur’an recitation, followed by a speech from the school’s director, Tariq ibn Saud Al-Balheed, where he said: “The ceremony embodies the leadership’s attention to the Holy Qur’an and its recitation and interpretation.”
Al-Balheed said that education is the main foundation to achieve the visions and desired goals in reaching sustainable development, and RCJ pays great attention to education with its various fields, with this school being just one of the edifices of science and knowledge in Jubail.
The ceremony included an operetta presentation, followed by the screening of a documentary film which sheds light on the programs implemented by the school, and its march of achievements.
At the end of the ceremony, Al-Alonai honored the graduating students, and then memorial photos were taken.
Memorizers, or huffaz, are highly respected within the Islamic community. They are privileged to use the title “Hafiz” before their names. They are tested on their knowledge: In one test they are asked to continue the recitation of a passage taken randomly from the Qur’an. As they do not know which passage will be chosen, they must know the whole text in order to be sure of passing. In another test, a would-be hafiz might be asked to recite verses containing a specific word or phrase.
Yearly, thousands of students master the Qur’an worldwide and complete the book with interpretation and memorization.
The Qu’ran is the only book, religious or secular, that has been memorized completely by millions of people.
