Residents of Alyaqoot district in North Obhur have submitted several complaints to a number of authorities about the lack of paved roads, street lights and improving the level of cleanliness in the areas.

Residents have also complained that expat workers have been using unoccupied houses in the area as a place of refuge. In response, the official spokesman of the Jeddah Municipality, Sami Nawar, has said that authorities responsible for the area have been tasked with finding immediate solutions to these complaints.

Nawar said that an immediate plan will be implemented to light up the streets, pave the roads, and clean the area as part of the overall plan to find solutions to the problems of the neighborhood and ensure that no uninhabited houses are exploited.

Fouad Kurdi, a resident of the neighborhood says he went to the Jeddah Municipality as a representative of the residents of the neighborhoods to explain the situation and complaints of the residents. He says the residents were disappointed with the lack of response to their requests. Despite the statements from authorities to amend the situation, he says, no action has been taken in the neighborhood, which is one of the newer and more high-end neighborhoods in Jeddah.

The infrastructural development in the neighborhood is almost complete at 85 percent which qualifies it to receive these basic services. However, debris from construction sites is still strewn about in the streets for long periods of time forcing the residents to get them cleaned at their own expense.

Kurdi said that the neighborhood is suffering from a severe shortage of garbage dumpsters so residents burn the waste at night, exposing themselves to the risk of diseases from the scattered rubbish.

Additionally, many streets in the neighborhoods are filled with potholes which collect muddy water that contribute to the spread of odors and diseases such as dengue fever.






Kurdi says that houses which are still incomplete have been left for years and some are on the verge of collapse. But they are now being used as a refuge for foreigners running away from the law. The residents have complained to the municipality about this problem numerous times but to no avail.

Although there are more than 80 light posts in the neighborhood, more than half are not functional and have not lit up in the past five months.

There has been no news or action from the municipality so far.
