JEDDAH: The Special Criminal Court in Riyadh has sentenced a Saudi to 10 years in prison and a ban on travel outside the Kingdom for a similar period after he was found guilty of tracking news of the Daesh terrorist group via his Twitter account.
The man was also found guilty of being influenced by the terrorist group’s tweets, giving support to them, and of writing threatening letters against security personnel, in addition to creating a false ID after deleting his original account.
The court also found him guilty of posting anti-state remarks as well as other tweets against the minister of interior, containing threats of bombs and missiles, claiming in his posts that every tyrant will be eliminated. He was also found guilty of posting inflammatory writings, such as “the belts are ready and the lions have sworn to die, no way will they surrender to you.”
The court issued a ruling of 10 years of prison starting from the date of his arrest; a fine of SR50,000; closing his account on the social networking site Twitter; confiscation of his mobile phone; preventing him from writing on social media; and banning him from traveling abroad after his release from prison for a further 10 years.
