A Saudi female gynecologist working at the Gynecology and Maternity Hospital in Makkah was fined SR2.2 million for committing a series of medical errors, burnews.com reported.

The Appeal Court in Makkah upheld the decision, which had earlier been issued by the Legal Health Authority, on the imposition of the fine.

Four years ago, the gynecologist was referred to the authority for investigation into several medical errors. The authority, accordingly, decided to fine her.

The doctor had appealed to the Chamber of Grievances against the decision but, based on certain evidence, the chamber had approved the authority’s decision.

A total of 1,759 physicians and 1,954 health care practitioners reportedly committed medical errors, accorded to data released by the Ministry of Health.

While more than 2,400 cases were presented to the ministry’s legal health authorities in 1434 AH.

Medical errors occurring during birth delivery operations captured the lion’s share of all errors, with a 70-percent chunk.

Egyptian doctors have the highest rates of medical errors, accounting for 44 percent of all cases, followed by Saudis (15 percent), Syrians (nine percent), and Indians (six percent), according to the ministry’s reports.
