A 28-year-old Saudi citizen fell to his death in an open well near a village in Makkah on Tuesday night in a rare accident.

“We received a report about the man who fell into a well that is 25 meters deep and filled with water,” said Col. Saeed Sarhan, Makkah’s Civil Defense spokesman, in a statement on Wednesday.

Civil Defense teams went to the scene and extracted the man’s body from the well, after which the corpse was transferred to a local hospital.

There have been calls for more stringent regulations to seal off open wells in the Kingdom following the death of six-year-old Lama Al-Rouqi, who died after falling into an abandoned well in Tabuk.
