A Saudi who was detained in an Iraqi jail with his family has managed to return to Saudi Arabia after having escaped from the jail.

Abdulrahman Al-Jaries, lawyer for the Saudi detainees, confirmed his arrival at Riyadh airport from Istanbul.

Earlier, Ahmad Al-Binaqi called his uncle from Istanbul while on his way to the airport to inform him that he would be boarding the flight to Saudi Arabia.

Al-Binaqi’s uncle expressed his gratitude to officials in the Saudi Embassies in Turkey and Jordan for their concern in following up his nephew’s case.

Al-Binaqi will stay in a hotel until comprehensive medical tests are conducted to ensure his well-being.

“Al-Binaqi didn’t have a mobile phone and used mine to call his family in Saudi Arabia,” said the taxi driver who took him to the airport.

He said one of his friends told him about a man and his family who were looking for someone to drive them from the Saudi Embassy to the airport.

“I later learned that the man was a Saudi prisoner who had escaped from an Iraqi prison and wanted to go back to his country, so I drove him to the airport free of charge,” he said.

Al-Binaqi had been arrested with his family of four children and Syrian wife two years ago.

The family was taken to a prison in Baghdad prior to their transfer to Al-Mosel where with the help of a group of other prisoners, they escaped from Iraq amid the recent tumult in the conflict-ridden country.
