JEDDAH: Saudi Arabia has announced that the country’s citizens are safe in Lebanon, but has joined Kuwait and Bahrain in issuing advisories warning its citizens not to travel there.

Saudi Ambassador to Lebanon Ali Asiri said Tuesday that the embassy has not received any report or complaint from Saudi citizens about safety issues after the events in Beirut on Sunday, which saw protests over the country’s uncollected rubbish, perceived government corruption, and power and water shortages.

“The embassy is following up on events in Lebanon and is in contact with Saudi citizens around the clock. Officials are available at the embassy at all times to address any emergency issues or crises.”

“All citizens have been informed of the need to stay away from protest events to ensure their safety,” he said. The Kingdom wants a stable and secure Lebanon, with an organized political life and space for legitimate organizations to solve their problems through dialogue, he said.

Bahrain called on its citizens to avoid traveling to Lebanon. “In light of the current situation in Lebanon and the unstable security environment, we urge all Bahraini citizens currently present in Lebanon to leave immediately,” the Bahraini Foreign Ministry announced Tuesday.

The Kuwaiti Embassy called on its nationals to remain vigilant at all times. “Under the current critical circumstances, Kuwaiti nationals in Lebanon are advised to cancel any unnecessary plans and leave,” it said in a statement.

The Lebanese government will hold a meeting soon regarding the waste issue in the country, while the campaign ‘You Stink’ announced it would postpone protests in the streets until calm returns to central Beirut.
