The University of Essex has announced a scholarship in memory of student Nahid Almanea.

The scholarship student was stabbed to death in a hate crime last month by an unidentified man when she was on her way to the English Language Institute in Colchester, Britain.

Donations can now be made online toward the scholarship fund with the final details being developed in discussion with her family and friends, a University of Essex press statement said.

Those wanting to make a donation can go to the Essex Spirit blog at: www.essex.ac.uk/see/nahid

The scholarship is expected to be awarded to an international student who wants to work in science education and further information will be released as soon as possible, the statement said.

It quoted Vice Chancellor Anthony Forster as saying: “Nahid was an exceptional student who had impressed her teachers through her hard work and enthusiasm for her studies. She will be missed by all who knew her.

“The scholarship in memory of Nahid will help us to honor a talented member of our community both now and in the years ahead.

“Our university is incredibly proud of the strength of our international and diverse community and we hope people will stand with us in remembering and honoring Nahid by making a donation to the scholarship fund.”

Nahid had been doing an English language program at the International Academy at the University of Essex since January.

After completing her studies at Essex she was hoping to go on to study life sciences at the Ph.D. level.

More than 300 messages of condolence have now been left on the University’s Essex Spirit blog. Many members of the university community have also left comments in books of condolence made available on the Colchester Campus. There are also books of condolence at Greenstead Community Centre and Wivenhoe Council Office.

The University is continuing to discuss additional ways of honoring Nahid’s memory.
